ABOUT THIS ISSUE This issue presents results from the December quarter 2007 Survey of Tourist Accommodation (STA) for the following categories of establishments:
DATA NOTES From the March quarter 2008 release of Survey of Tourist Accommodation (cat. no. 8635.0) the seasonally adjusted and trend estimates will be derived using autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) modelling. Adoption of ARIMA modelling will reduce the extent of revisions to the seasonally adjusted and trend estimates. SUMMARY COMMENTARY ORIGINAL Hotels, motels and serviced apartments This summary contains key findings for original estimates. While trend and seasonally adjusted data are only available for hotels, motels and serviced apartments with 15 or more rooms, original estimates have two additional data series comprising hotels, motels and serviced apartments with 5 to 14 rooms and 5 or more rooms. Original series are impacted by seasonal variations and irregular or non-seasonal influences and comparisons between quarters should be made with caution. Accommodation takings In December quarter 2007, accommodation takings were $2,078.1 million for hotels, motels and serviced apartments with 5 or more rooms, comprising $2,000.6 million for hotels, motels and serviced apartments with 15 or more rooms and $77.5 million for hotels, motels and serviced apartments with 5 to 14 rooms. Accommodation takings in December quarter 2007 for hotels, motels and serviced apartments with 15 or more rooms were highest in New South Wales ($650.2 million) and Queensland ($552.2 million). The December quarter 2007 average takings per room night occupied were $146.89 for establishments with 5 or more rooms. This was heavily influenced by hotels, motels and serviced apartments with 15 or more rooms which contribute 96.3% to total takings, and had an average takings per room night occupied of $149.75. The average for 5 to 14 room establishments was $98.36. Room occupancy rate The room occupancy rate for hotels, motels and serviced apartments with 5 or more rooms was 65.2% in December quarter 2007. For hotels, motels and serviced apartments with 15 or more rooms, the room occupancy rate was 66.8%, while demand for 5 to 14 room hotels, motels and serviced apartments was lower, as reflected by a room occupancy rate of 46.6%. Room nights occupied Room nights occupied were 14.1 million in December quarter 2007 for hotels, motels and serviced apartments with 5 or more rooms. For hotels, motels and serviced apartments with 15 or more rooms, room nights occupied were 13.4 million in December quarter 2007, while for establishments with 5 to 14 rooms, room nights occupied were 0.8 million. New South Wales contributed the highest proportion (31.1%) of occupied rooms for hotels, motels and serviced apartments with 15 or more rooms, followed by Queensland at 28.0%. Average length of stay The average length of stay in December quarter 2007 for hotels, motels and serviced apartments with both 5 or more rooms and 15 or more rooms was 2.2 days. For establishments with 5 to 14 rooms, the average length of stay was 1.8 days. Queensland (2.7 days) reported the longest average length of stay for hotels, motels and serviced apartments with 15 or more rooms, followed by Western Australia (2.4 days). The shortest average length of stay was in Tasmania (1.8 days). Star grading In December quarter 2007, the room occupancy rate for five-star hotels, motels and serviced apartments with 5 or more rooms was 77.3% compared with 31.6% for one-star. For hotels, motels and serviced apartments with 15 or more rooms, the room occupancy rate was 77.6% for five-star establishments compared with 31.1% for one-star establishments. In the 5-14 rooms category, three-star (51.7%) and four-star (51.1%) establishments had the highest room occupancy rates in December quarter 2007, compared with one-star establishments at 32.6%. In December quarter 2007, the average takings per room night occupied for five-star hotels, motels and serviced apartments with 5 or more rooms was $249.21 compared with $67.61 for one-star. In the 15 or more rooms category, the average takings was $249.15 for five-star establishments compared with $74.35 for one-star establishments. For establishments with 5 to 14 rooms, five-star establishments had the highest average takings of $266.07, compared with one-star establishments at $54.65. For the five-star category, average takings for establishments with 5 to 14 rooms was $16.92 higher than the average takings for the 15 or more room establishments in December quarter 2007. Caravan parks, holiday flats, units and houses, and visitor hostels Accommodation takings In December quarter 2007, accommodation takings for caravan parks were $258.3 million. New South Wales ($95.0 million) had the highest accommodation takings for all caravan parks for December quarter 2007, contributing 36.8% of the total. Short-term caravan park takings were $213.8 million in December quarter 2007 which was 82.8% of total caravan park takings. Accommodation takings for holiday flats, units and houses were $176.5 million in December quarter 2007. Real estate takings accounted for 26.6% of total holiday flats, units and houses takings, the rest being for other letting entities. For visitor hostels, accommodation takings were $58.7 million in December quarter 2007. Occupancy rate The site occupancy rate for all caravan parks in December quarter 2007 was 52.4%. Short-term caravan park occupancy was 48.8% and long-term caravan park occupancy was 77.5%. For holiday flats, units and houses, the unit occupancy rate was 51.2% in December quarter 2007. The bed occupancy rate for visitor hostels in December quarter 2007 was 52.5%. New South Wales, Western Australia and Queensland had the highest bed occupancy rates for visitor hostels in December quarter 2007 with 62.8%, 57.2% and 55.0% respectively.
